Annual Festival at the Nogales, Sonora Museum of Art from August 14 – 16

The third annual cultural arts festival “Taco de Perro” started on Thursday, August 14 and will continue through Saturday, August 16 at the Museum of Art in downtown Nogales, just two blocks south of the DeConcini border crossing.

The festival, which is sponsored by the Nogales artists’ collective El Colectivo de Arte Taco de Perro A.C., features an art exhibition, presentations, film screenings, discussions, music, poetry and a “Tianguis Cultural,” where artists will offer their works for sale.

The Museum of Art is very easy to find, just walk south after crossing the border until you see the historic church straight ahead. The museum is directly across the street from the church.

Thursday, August 14

Book presentation – “El Eclair” by Amancio de Lier (Francisco Javier de León Figueroa), from Magdalena de Kino, Sonora

7:30 p.m.

“Identidad” (identity) Contemporary Dance with the Instituto Superior de Arte, Nogales, Sonora. Featuring music from Marcos Pineda, Trova Hip-Hop Nogales and singer Javier Cinco from Hermosillo.

After hours at the Qahwah House, starting at 9:20 p.m. – singer Jonatán Velasco from Nogales.

Friday, August 15

5:00 p.m.

Projection of mini-documentaries by Prometeo Lucero

7:00 p.m.

Opening of the Art Exhibit “Equivalencias,” featuring paintings and photography from Sonoran and Arizona artists, the music of Susana and Punk Rock DJ Night, from Nogales, Arizona; singer and minstrel El Indio Toribio, from Hermosillo; and a performance of music and poetry by Nidia Barajas and Alas Blisset from Makila 69 (from Tijuana and Cd. Juarez)

Tianguis Cultural – an art fair where artists display their work for sale or exchange.

Video Conference – A presentation by Mexico City museum curator Irving Dominguez, on the process of curating the art exhibition “Todos Somos Migrantes” (we are all migrants)

2:00 p.m.

Discussion – Counter Culture and the Border, with Angel Orozco from Hermosillo

4:00 p.m.

Table discussion of editorial projects, with representatives from Tres Guayabas (Nogales), Rizomas Ediciones (Hermosillo), Epigrafes (Nogales) and Pez Banana (Hermosillo)
