$300k in Cocaine Seized at the Mariposa Port of Entry
21 May: After a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) narcotics detection canine provided a positive alert to agents, a semi tractor-trailer truck driven by a 33-year-0ld resident of Nogales, Sonora was directed to secondary inspection. There, customs agents discovered a “non-factory compartment” built into the frame of the truck, which contained 12 packages of cocaine weighing a total of 29 lbs. The drugs, valued at $300,000, were processed for seizure along with the truck, and the driver was arrested.
Suspected Kidnapper Nabbed by Customs at Mariposa Pedestrian Crossing
22 May: U.S. Customs and Border protection officers arrested 28-year-old Jorge Santiago Cortez of Los Angeles as he tried to pass through the Mariposa pedestrian crossing. A routine records check showed that Santiago Cortez had an open, extraditable warrant for arrest as a suspect in a California kidnapping investigation. He was arrested and turned over to local law enforcement.
